Care That Continues When Your Usual Carer Steps Away

Care That Continues When Your

Respite care is short-term home care provided when the usual family carer is temporarily away from their caring role. It is not a change in routine or a disruption to care. It is continuity through a trained, carefully matched carer who steps into the home and continues support in a calm and familiar way. It is arranged when a family carer needs time away for rest, travel, work, illness, or personal commitments, or when care coverage is needed at short notice. During this time, your loved one continues to receive personal care, medication support, meals, mobility help, companionship, and overnight support where needed, all delivered in line with their established routine.

HTR Care has been supporting families across Greater London and surrounding areas since 2017, operating from UB8 1HE. We are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and rated Good across all 5 inspection domains: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-Led. In most cases, we begin respite care within 24 hours, and sooner when the situation is urgent.

What is Respite Care?

Respite care is temporary home care that supports your loved one while their usual family carer is away. It ensures care continues without interruption, maintaining the same routines, comfort, and level of attention your loved one is used to.

Instead of the family carer stepping back from their role, a trained respite carer steps in for a defined period and follows the established care plan at home.

This includes personal care, medication routines, meals, mobility support, companionship, and overnight care if required.

In England, respite care provided through regulated providers is overseen by the Care Quality Commission under the Health and Social Care Act 2008. This ensures carers are trained, safe, and properly supervised.

HTR Care is fully CQC-registered, giving families confidence that even temporary care is delivered to the same regulated standard as long-term support.

Three Types of Respite Support

3

Specialist Respite

Frequently Asked Questions About After-Hospital Care

Respite care is a temporary home care service where a professional carer supports the person being cared for while the family carer takes a break. Care can be arranged for a few hours, a full day, overnight, or for several weeks. The process starts with a free home assessment, followed by a written care plan and a carer introduction before support begins.
Respite care can be funded in several ways. Many families self-fund for flexibility and speed. Local councils may contribute following a Care Needs Assessment and Carer's Assessment under the Care Act 2014. NHS Continuing Healthcare may include respite within an approved package. Attendance Allowance, Direct Payments, a Carer's Personal Budget, and charitable grants from organisations such as Carers Trust or Age UK may also help cover costs.
Respite care in London typically costs £28 to £42 per hour for visiting care, £130 to £180 per night for overnight support, or £1,200 to £1,600 per week for live-in respite. Specialist condition-trained respite is typically £1,300 to £1,700 per week. HTR Care provides a personalised quote following a free home assessment.
Yes. Emergency respite care can be arranged within 24 to 48 hours of first contact. After a short assessment, a trained carer can step in quickly to maintain routine and provide safe support while the family carer takes a break. HTR Care is available 7 days a week to respond to urgent requests.
Yes, in most cases. Family carers can continue to receive Carer's Allowance for up to 4 weeks in any 6-month period when they take a break from caring, provided the person being cared for continues to meet the eligibility criteria. Rules on Carer's Allowance and breaks are specific, and it is worth seeking advice from the Carer's Allowance Unit or a benefits adviser if you are unsure how your situation is affected.
Live-in care is a long-term arrangement where a carer lives in the home and provides continuous daily support. Respite care is temporary support arranged for a specific period while the usual family carer takes a break. Respite care can also take the form of live-in support when round-the-clock cover is needed during the break.
HTR Care can arrange emergency respite care across London within 24 to 48 hours of first contact. Following a rapid assessment, we match a trained carer who can step in quickly while maintaining the same quality standards as planned respite care. Our team is available 7 days a week including weekends and bank holidays.
Respite care can last from a few hours to several weeks depending on what the family carer needs. Many families arrange respite for one to two weeks, but longer arrangements are possible. HTR Care provides flexible respite care across London with the option to extend the arrangement if required.
HTR Care builds every respite care plan around maintaining the client's usual routine. During the home assessment, we document daily habits, personal preferences, medication schedules, and personal care needs. The carer is introduced before the first visit and follows the agreed care plan, helping ensure continuity and comfort, especially important for people living with dementia.
